“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

— Albert Einstein

Act One – In all my Companion stories I use their artificial intelligence to explore what it means to be human. We take the pleasure of creating or appreciating art for granted but Companions can’t. Like the other non-rational aspects that are a part of the human experience, they have to seek to understand it, and therein lies the problem. I have touched on the subject of art in my other stories but only superficially. Act One of this story explores the relationship between artificial intelligence and art more deeply.

Act Two – moves on from a focus on art to explore the implications of what was learned in Act One regarding intelligence in general and pursues a more technical investigation.

Again, to help with imagining the characters, I have included my own “casting” using well-known actors. The casting is not based on their respective bodies of work or anything to do with their personal lives, but purely on their physical appearance which I found useful during the writing process but subsequently grew attached to.
